PostHeaderIcon A Pastoral Letter

To our same gender loving brothers and sisters, their families, friends and allies

November 5, 2008

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Grace to you and peace on this day after the General Election and in the days ahead.

We have come through an historic election and many of us were involved in important ways, working for the candidates and issues that we care about.  Regardless of how one feels about the Presidential results, the votes on ballot measures addressing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) concerns were disappointing.  While these ballot measures were only in a handful of states, the results affect us all. We write to express our solidarity, the assurance that we are not alone, acknowledge the significant progress made in spite of the results, and the good news of God's presence with us, especially as we seek to move forward from this place.

Gay anarchist group infiltrates, protests outside Eaton County church

(Nathan Harris/City Pulse) The "outside team" focuses its attention on traffic passing by the Mt. Hope Church in Eaton County.

A gay anarchist group infiltrated the Mt. Hope Church in Eaton County Sunday morning, disrupting a service by pulling a fire alarm, dropping leaflets and yelling at parishioners, a pastor said.

The group, Bash Back, was simultaneously picketing outside the church, beating on buckets and using a megaphone to shout “Jesus was a homo” and other slogans as confused churchgoers continued to enter the building.

PostHeaderIcon Gutting elected delegate to General Synod

At a special meeting of the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ, James L. Gutting was elected to serve as a delegate to the General Synod #27 and #28.  General Synod, which meets every two years, is a gathering of people delegated by our 38 Conferences to represent the United Church of Christ and to address important matters relating to the church. General Synod participants also include visitors from UCC churches; local, conference and national UCC staff; representatives from many diverse UCC institutions, agencies and ministries; and friends and colleagues from other faith traditions. This gathering offers us a chance to worship together, build friendships, share and celebrate our varied ministries, and recognize our relationships in the ecumenical and world community. General Synod delegates meet to address important business, which includes approving a budget for the mission of the church at the national setting, electing the Collegium of Officers, and voting on Pronouncements, Resolutions and Proposals for Action.

The upcoming General Synod will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan from June 26-30, 2009.

In addition to the business of the church, participants will reunite with old friends and make new ones;  experience awe-inspiring worship services and dynamic speakers; participate in various service project opportunities; help the church discern how to live out our faith in our churches, communities, nation and world; learn about justice and advocacy education, actions and opportunities; and attend various concerts, workshops, exhibits,  and movies.  As churches within the host conference, members of both First Congregational UCC and St. Johns UCC, will volunteer in a variety of ways from baking cookies to serving as floor ushers and myriad other ways.  In addition, members may also attend the various worship services, special events and volunteer at the service projects.

PostHeaderIcon Barack Obama, 20-year UCC member, elected U.S. president

Written by Gregg Brekke
November 5, 2008

Televised political pundits began to concede victory to Sen. Barack Obama in the 2008 U.S. presidential election as Ohio and Pennsylvania, crucial "swing" states for both candidates, were won by the democrat from Illinois.

The 10pm predictions came to fruition as the west-coast states of Washington, Oregon and California – with a combined 73 electoral votes – all endorsed Obama.

Obama's relationships with the UCC came to light nationally as unflattering video clips from his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright - pastor emeritus of Chicago's Trinity UCC, circulated on the Internet in early 2008.

Wright's sometimes fiery calls for national repentance and political change were removed from their contexts and compiled into a montage that portrayed his preaching as anti-American.

Obama made a faith commitment at, and had been a member of, Chicago's Trinity UCC for 20 years, prior to withdrawing his membership from the church on May 31 of this year.
